The Bloom Is Off

Gracie is getting through her molt. She doesn’t look as ratty and three days last week she came outside the coop without being coaxed. She looks less than robust but is eating well and moving around.

But a new wrinkle developed yesterday in chicken chores. I have a heated water bowl so their water stays open during the cold days.I refill and clean it as necessary.

But I noticed it stopped working which means I have to haul water out to the coop several times a day. It’s a hassle to carry it out back with the water sloshing over my gloves and onto my jeans. Then I have to lift it (gently!) over the fence while stooping over.

The cold weather, uneven, muddy footing and the lack of a gate is a real pain.

I can’t wait for spring and A GATE!

I’ve found that the girls dislike the snow and the wind. The snow gives them cold feet and the wind freaks them out.

Whenever it’s windy they stay inside and peek out once in awhile just to check and see if the wind gods have settled down. It’s pretty hilarious.
