Compost Queen

I’ve been wanting to start a compost for years. I was thrilled to receive a composter from my son and his wife for Christmas. Almost the best present ever!

I set it up immediately, very excited - the literature said I’d have compost within 2 weeks. It’s a black barrel that you fill and spin around once a week.

Well, it’s been a couple of weeks and the stuff I put in the composter looks pretty much unchanged.

It hasn’t broken down hardly at all. I’m going to have to start a second compost, I have so much chicken dung and wood chips to dispose of. The second one will be an open pit that will take longer to break down than the barrel type.

It’s going to be so cool to have compost to use on the garden from my very own chickens!

I also have a small scrap bin sitting on the counter where I can toss biodegradable scraps like dead leaves from my houseplants, avocado peelings, shriveled tomatoes, etc. Eventually I’ll dump it into the bigger compost outside.

Going green is an attitude as much as anything.
